Creating Traditions

We have had a fall tradition the last couple of years with friends where we pick a new campground every year and go camping with our families. It has become something that the parents and the kids look forward to every year. A lot of the places that we have visited celebrate Halloween throughout the month of October so they have kids activities, hayrides, and trick-or-treating. Here’s a glimpse at what took place at this year’s Creepy Campout. If you can’t get away, take some of these ideas and use for your own fall campout right in your backyard…
Crafts
A lot of the moms will bring Halloween themed crafts for the kiddos. This year some of them painted and carved pumpkins. Another year we made adorable Halloween themed mason jar lanterns. The kids always have a blast, even if it is just coloring and using Halloween stickers.
Hiking
We always find at least one great hike to do while we camp. The kids love throwing on their rain boots and going creeking. We always find lots of cool critters along the way :)
Other Activities
My boys love to fish so we always include fishing poles on the packing list. We have a campfire going 24-7. The adults love hanging out around the fire while the kids play and ride bikes. The older boys learned to whittle this year and how to build the perfect campfire! I think one of the favorite things for the kiddos is getting glow in the dark bracelets and flashlights at night and just running around chasing each other. So many awesome memories are definitely made!
Food
Of course, it wouldn’t be camping without some delicious grub! Everyone usually pitches in on this and we have communal meals. I love doing this because we always have so much delicious food to try out. This year we had a chili night. My friend discovered that her Skyline allows you to purchase a crock pot full of chili so she brought her crock in and they filled it to the brim! She bought their cheese and had crackers and spaghetti and it was the perfect dinner to warm our bellies after the kiddos went Trick or Treating!
Of course you have to have something sweet (besides candy!) with all the savory too! I made things easy on myself and placed an order for some YUMMY Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes made with whipped icing from my local Kroger bakery. I love whipped icing and the fact that Kroger offers festive, on-trend flavors depending on the time of year. You can get anything from S’mores to Naturally Flavored Lemon to Cookies-n-Crème and limited-edition Pumpkin Spice (right now!). If you don’t have a lot of time like me and want to take your cupcakes to the next level without all the work, you can customize what you want and choose from these exclusive varieties of popular flavors! You can check out all the amazing flavors on the Ask for Whipped website, meaning everyone loves my dessert, but I didn’t have to slave away in my kitchen… or camper!
Well let’s just say, they had me at Pumpkin Spice! This just seems to go great for all things fall. After placing the order for the cupcakes and the whipped icing, I asked the bakery to decorate it for our Creepy Campout using fun Halloween themed rings for the kiddos. I gave them the creative expression to do what they wanted with them and they turned out FABULOUS!
The Pumpkin Spiced whipped icing was TO. DIE. FOR. Everyone loved them and it was great that I didn’t have to spend hours in my camper trying to get cupcakes decorated and ready. I am all about easy these days! My family LOVES whipped icing and it is actually the healthier choice! Whipped icing has less sugar and fewer calories than Buttercream icing, so be sure to ask for WHIPPED! (This Pumpkin Spice whipped icing is available now at Kroger through mid-November.) As you can see, all the kids were sure to grab a cupcake for dessert!
Add Camping To Your Bucketlist
I never thought I would be a camping girl and although I don’t camp in a tent (I am team camper all the way), I will say it has been some of the best memories we have made over the years. There is something about being out in nature that brings everyone together. I love camping in the fall because you can really theme out your trip with great food, fun activities and of course trick or treating which is so much fun!
Whether you think you would like it or not, you really should give it a try! You will be surprised at how much fun it really is!
Does your family go camping? I would love to know what is your favorite thing is about camping! Also, if you love whipped icing as much as I do, what flavor would you pick for your next celebration? And be sure to follow all the sweetness on Instagram !
