I shared on social media our initial experience with AvaStars, a new vendor at the Kenwood Towne Centre. The idea is super cool…. get your own personal doll/action figure that looks just like you! I was intrigued when they contacted me and had to check it out with the boys.
The vendor is right next to the food court, in the middle of the mall. It looks almost like a spaceship so the boys were really excited.
First, you pick out your doll or action figure. You can see your choices on the website, but they also have them there so you can see them in person. After you pick your doll, you enter in your demographics like hair and eye color and then you go “inside” to get your face scanned. This is what they use to make your figures face look like you. They recommend the child to be at least 4 or the face won’t fill the space and your doll may not come out very well. They also need to hold very still while the camera is scanning the face so this may be harder for smaller children. Once they are all finished with this, they get to view their video. This has their action figure and their name so the boys enjoyed this part especially. Each child will get a card which allows them to come back whenever they want to view their special video.
Then you wait… it takes several weeks to get your figure and for my boys they didn’t quite understand why they weren’t leaving with their doll so I would make sure you prepare them for this. Of course, they were super excited to get their special packages in the mail and get their personalized action figure!
Pros:
- You can get a video and doll that is made just for you.
- You can watch the video over and over again. They even email you your video so you can watch it at home.
- Each doll comes with a few accessories. For example, the Karate Kid came with a boxing helmet, gloves and shoes.
- Even if you don’t get a doll, your can make a video for FREE (first time users only). Each additional video is $3.99
Cons:
- You have to wait for the doll to come. Hard for the littles.
- The price. $40 seems a bit steep to me, but it is a cool one time experience. Not sure I would spend the money on it unless I had kids really into dolls or action figures and it was a special occasion like Birthday or Christmas.
- I didn’t think the dolls looked like my boys, but my boys did. They said “these look just like us” so I guess that is all that matters :)
Overall, it is something different that my boys have never experienced so that was pretty cool. I think it is worth it to just go and get the FREE video. Then you can get the doll later if you choose.
*I was given two free action figures to review so I could share my thoughts with you here. All thoughts and opinions are my own*
