Quick & Easy DIY Produce Wash

by MHSjennie on February 21, 2014

If you think about all the hands that have touched your produce before it gets to your house, it kinda makes you wanna say “Gross”!!!  Is rinsing your produce under water enough? Do the fruit/veggie washes really work? How do you get your produce clean? You’ve got to wonder how clean your food is after the farmers have grown the produce and it passes through all those hands that have touched it to get it all the way to your table!

If your produce was conventionally grown, it was probably sprayed with pesticides. Even after washing with water and some sprays, there may be a pesticide residue that remains because it can be incorporated into the produce during the growing process. SO, regardless if you aren’t as worried about germs as I am, I think it is important to wash that produce!

Studies have shown that a diluted vinegar rinse (3 parts water, 1 part vinegar) can remove up to 98 percent of the bacteria so I have been using that for a few years now. Recently I added a few drops of Lemon Essential oil to my produce wash. It is an AMAZING natural disinfectant and has strong anti-bacterial properties, so it works wonderfully when it comes to cleaning your produce!

DIY Produce Wash

  • Fill up your container (I use a bowl, but some people just throw everything in their sink… mine is never clean so that would never happen!) with the 3 parts water, 1 part vinegar and add just a few drops of doTERRA lemon essential oil.
  • Add your produce and let it soak for a few minutes.
  • Rinse it off and let it dry.

Using this DIY produce wash will save you MONEY because the store-bought washes can be pricey! Essential oils can do so much more than just clean!  Check out my posts about how to use them for DIY body products and to treat your own health concerns.
