Well, there isn’t a whole lot you can do with the flu, but ride it out! As you can see, my post is coming a day late….why you ask??! Well, I have been cleaning up all bodily fluids since Sunday and today is the first day I have even been able to open my computer!
Grayson came down with the flu Sunday and then Cody and I on Wed (at the same time) and then Daddy. This was a ROUGH flu. I wasn’t even able to lift my head for almost an entire day. Thankfully, Steve and I were not sick at the same time so someone was able to take care of the kids! Even after you are through the worst part…. your stomach just isn’t the same for days. Grayson is just now eating somewhat normally and it has been a week for him! To top it off, Cody came down with a double ear infection thursday eve. The doc actually said that you can give them Ibuprofen every six hours for three days and the infection could clear up on its own. If after the three days, he is still complaining, we can fill the antibiotic script. I found that interesting, but I like that we can minimize the use of antibiotics as much as possible! So far, I haven’t even had to give him the Ibu but before bed.
A few things to have on hand this winter as a just in case:
- Crackers. I usually buy unsalted, but salted is good for when you are going on two days of eating crackers… it gives it a little somethin’ somethin’ :)
- Coconut Water. This is SUPER hydrating and a great way to add those electrolytes back into the body!
- Peppermint. Anything peppermint seems to make an upset tummy just feel a little better. I love using Peppermint oil or Digestzen (this is one of my favorite essential oils for any tummy troubles!). I rub this around the belly button, clockwise, and it really helps with nausea. Cody specifically asks for this when his stomach is upset. I LOVE using essential oils for just about anything!
I rub On Guard Oil on the bottoms of our feet and you can put 10-15 drops in a spray bottle with water to disinfect the house from all those germies! Try to stay healthy during flu season and I hope these tips help you survive IF the flu bug happens to hit your house! What do you like to have most when you are feeling under the weather??!

Thanks for the tip on the peppermint oil around the belly button! Do you use it neat?
If you are interested in a couple natural alternatives for your list…Coconut water is much better for you than both Pedialyte and Gatorade. And for the ear infection and just about everything else, Garlic! Garlic is antibiotic and antiviral. Goot is great stuff and easy to make. Another great natural antibiotic is Colloidal Silver. We always have that on hand. We use it on cuts and things. I even used it on my husband’s finger when it was healing from almost being cut off. It helps regenerate the cells to repair the skin.
I love my home apothecary and the fact that we rarely need any interventions. Sometimes hubby gives me funny looks but even he accepts my treatments most of the time. If you start the kids young with things they will being more accepting.
No problem! Any time Cody's tummy hurts he asks for peppermint oil! LOVE IT! I am SO impressed with these other remedies you suggested! Do you just buy Coconut Water in the store like Whole Foods? Does it taste ok… just wondering if the kids would drink it! What do you do with the garlic? Eat it? Also, is colloidal silver an oil? I am SO excited to try some of these! Thanks soooo much! Our hubbies love us don't they?!Jenniehttp://www.motherhoodsupport.com/From: notifications@intensedebatemail.comTo: jenniewestrich@hotmail.comSubject: Surviving Motherhood – New comment requires moderation on: What helps the FLU?!
I am glad everyone is feeling better! I hate when everyone gets the bug! We recently had colds that kept getting passed back and forth and of course I still had it during labor!!
Now that really sucks!! You want to feel your best during labor :) How is that baby of yours?! I need to come see her!!! Poor Cody looks like a little ghost in this pic… I hate when they get so pale like that… freaks me out. Hope he is feeling better today.
