There are some things I excel out…. math isn’t one of them! Even simple calculating is difficult for me so I stick with my trusty calculator. One of my fears as the boys get older is helping with math homework. The last thing I want is for my kids (who are in grade school) be smarter than me at math and know it! lol!! Seriously though, I do hope that neither of them have to struggle the way I did in math and I came across a pretty cool website that gives you games you can do with your kids to help them build their math skills. Carlito C. Caterpillar’s Math House Games was created by a high school math teacher. What I learned from this game is teaching your child math can start from a very young age and by just playing with them, using his 20 “steps”, they can learn and build their math skills.
Most of the games are simple and you can use things you have around the house. For example: group together like things (blocks) and then put one thing that doesn’t belong (a banana) and then ask your child what doesn’t belong to the group. Pretty easy right?! All of the “steps” are like this, allowing you to play with your child while teaching them math! I was surprised at how well Cody did with the few games Steve tried out with him. It just goes to show that finding things that can help you think outside the box with your kids can be a great benefit to them! They also have free manipulatives you can print from their website to assist you in the games.
I am always excited to find new, different and FUN ways to teach the kiddos, especially if it will help them with things that I struggled with as a kid. I saw on their website that this month they are offering free game step samples so you can check it out and see if it is something you would like!
