We asked on our facebook page if anyone was interested in self-esteem resources for teenage girls. Several of you said YES!!! I personally think this is SO important because a lot of the mentors we have for our youth, especially girls, aren’t the greatest. Many of these “stars” that our kids worship are dangerously skinny, drinking, drugging, promiscuous… the list goes on. Not having a daughter myself I cannot even come close to imagine how those of you with girls are really feeling. All I know is that we need to make as many resources available to parents and teens to allow for adequate teaching on self-esteem. We have put together a list of things we have found so far. Please let us know if you have any info, resources or ideas to add to the list! We will continue to post things as we find them!
- Be Your Own You: Check out this great website supporting self-esteem in girls
- High School’s Not Forever: this book addresses a range of issues that affect kids’ self-concepts (friends, betrayal, sexuality issues, hook-ups and break ups, responsibilities, etc.). It’s a pretty frank look at the range of realities of kids’ lives and experiences, with a bunch of tips snuck in (the difference between a real friend and a fake friend, how to get help from teachers, how to rebuild trust with your parents when you’ve blown it, etc.)
- Magic, Miracles and Synchronicity: A Journal of Gratitude and Awareness: This one has short stories, lots of quotes, activities, and space for journaling. Great for parents to do with their kids, grades 5 and up.
- Girlology’s There’s Something New About You: A Girl’s Guide to Growing Up, Girlology Hang-Ups, Hook-Ups, and Holding Out: Stuff You Need to Know About Your Body, Sex, & Dating, Girlology: A Girl’s Guide to Stuff that Matters : these book were recommended to us by renowned author Jane Bluestein so it must be good! You can also check out her website for other wonderful parental resources, including free printables!
- Beech Acres: check out this site which has anything and everything you need on parenting. I did a quick search on self-esteem and found several links!
That is all we have for now. Let us know what you think and again, if you have any other info or ideas please send them our way! Don’t forget to check out Parental Resources section with other wonderful sites and products!
