We are Florida bound soon and with summer in full swing, I am sure many of you are heading out-of-town for some family fun. I have compiled a short list of my summer vacation must haves to get you started and if you are just lying low for the summer, be sure to check out my summer bucket list post for lots of fun ideas!
Games
The days have come and gone when you could make a fort of your dads pickup truck for long trips. We would play cards, board games and just about anything we could think of. Thankfully, they have found a safer way for our kiddos to travel and that includes car seats. It makes it a little harder to play regular size board games, but you can get travel size yahtzee etc. and save the bigger games for your destination.
My boys have been having so much fun with some new games they just recently received! Check out this cute video of them :)
Shark Bite reminds me of the Go Fishing game we had as kids but cooler of course! The boys have enjoyed fishing and the suspense of when the shark’s mouth is going to close has them all giggling!
If your kids love building legos or playing with blocks and then love to make them crash to the floor, Build or Boom is for them! My boys are absolutely LOVING this game! They draw a card to see what they have to build and whomever gets the build first gets to crash their opponents creation. They have even liked just building what they want and then making their own go boom! This was is a good pick!
Hurricane- Canless Air System
I live in Cincinnati so unless you are going to the fake “beaches” at Brookville lake or Hueston Woods we don’t really have to deal with sand, but we are headed to the REAL beaches in Florida in less than a week. The Hurricane is a Canless Air System that blows over 260 mph of natural air, safely and effectively cleaning sandy seats, phones, cameras, and other essentials. It’s compact so I can easily throw it in our bag and take it to the beach to blow off all the sand that seems to get on EVERYTHING and end up in every crevice! I have always said that I would love to live at the beach if I didn’t have to deal with the annoying sand! With this device, you don’t have to…. it does the work for you! I can’t wait to use it next week.
It is also a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to the canned air that people use to clean keyboards and other electronics.
Books
We love getting read along books that come with a CD from the local library for long car trips. The CD reads the book to them and they follow along by looking at the pictures. I also am obsessed with HOOPLA. All you have to do is enter your library card info, create an account and you get 6 free ebooks/movies/ music or audiobooks each month. I have an account for each person in my family and let them download what they want before a trip.
If you like holding a book in your hand, here are some of the books my kids and myself are reading at the moment:
My 9-year-old is loving “The Tukor’s Journey” which is an action adventure novel threaded with sci-fi and we love reading it together. It really takes off from the beginning so it sparked his interest from the first page.
All my boys are loving the series “The ABCs of Everything”. This three-book series was designed to grow with young readers from ages 1-14 and the philosophy of this company is just awesome. They love helping kids to embrace the joy of learning to instilling a genuine sense of self-love, self-acceptance and personal responsibility to the world in which they live. From this creation of a solid foundation, they will build a lifetime of good habits and forward thinking. Their goal is to provide a fun atmosphere from which such learning and experience can be cultivated and supported on all levels and in all ways. You can read more about their mission, along with recipes and coloring pages on their website.
I was sent a few books that I can’t wait to read on the beach! Winning Streak, CHASING The Merry-Go-Round and SANITY Lost and Found.
Has anyone read these? What are you favorite books at the moment? I have been considering trying to get some friends together for a book club as I feel like I don’t make time to read as much as I did pre-kiddos…anyone else struggle with this?
So there you have it. A list of some of my summer travel must haves to keep the kiddos and yourself occupied. What would you add to the list?? Happy Travels!
